Is It a Changing of the Political Spectrum in France?

The French election is being fought out on different gradations of right wing politics. The left has been squeezed, and what we've not seen is really the fragmentation that we see to day. I think there's a real identity crisis in france which is also paving the way for this lurch to the right. If either of you can explain it to me, i would be really grateful.
