The Cowboy and the Rodeo

The cowboy represents an eternal recurrence of one incident after another unending and it represents the maintenance of mystery. In a lot of ways the horse becomes the number two character in the western myth alongside the cowboy. By about 1900 or little after 1900 local impresarios in the west started to formalize these unofficial informal contests by putting on shows in open arenas. The traditional rodeo tradition drew upon the roundup and added in the taming of wild horses which also often roamed on the prairies as cowboys would take on unnecessary challenges like trying to ride an untamed bull.
