Sandra Butschler: Schizophrenia is a defense against destructive impulses and feelings toward needed objects that are erected by a nascent psyche. In a sense, your schizophrenic turns inward to protect something from within; the spot in its schizophrenic is frightened of damaging, loved, and feared others. I wanted to ask, what do you think of this idea? We're more comfortable with the notion that mental life, itself, across the board, is a hazardous enterprise.
