On the first attempt at killing a whale on the Essex voyage, a 20 year old named Benjamin Lawrence through the harpoon. When it made contact with the whales hide, the once docile 60 foot long creature became a massive deadly monster. With just one swipe of his tail, a sperm whale could destroy a whale boat. Once the whale tired itself out though, the crew would haul themselves within stabbing distance. And there the real carnage would begin. But when everyone knew because in Nathaniel Filbert's words, the whale's spout would transform into a geyser of gore.
