John Sutter: Americans did not like being taxed by anyone in power. He says the Whiskey Rebellion was George Washington's first brush with people want to drink, and if they're going to drink anyway, we might as well tax it. The president tried to start a wine commerce in the U.S., but he pulled out the bottle of Chateau de Aquemier that Thomas Jefferson had made for him when he visited France. "It took a lot of prodding," said winemaker Piero Lertan who is one of America's most famous painters.
