Rousseau wanted to carry out Newton's project, but in terms of psychology and not in terms of physics. He revealed the very frail foundations to any claim made on behalf of natural laws existing in the world. What they had in common, I think, Julia, was a profound misunderstanding of one another. A nice foundation on which to build a friendship. Or at least, you know, a very short-lived friendship, is what this turned out to be.
