The Democratic Strategy to Take Back Control of Mississippi
In 1875, President Grant had to choose between protecting the rights of freed people and securing his party's future. The Democrats in Mississippi soon began devising a new strategy to take back control of their state. Republicans tried to celebrate the Civil Rights Act of 1875 as a major achievement, but in truth, it was largely toothless.
