Ibn Batuta did not speak Persian, the language used to conduct administrative and legal affairs in the Sultanate. He was educated in the Maliki school of Islamic jurisprudence within Sunni Islam. The Sultan Muhammad bin Tugluk hovers over everything that goes on in Ibn Batuta's life. If you upset the Sultan, the punishment was severe.
