The word linguistic theory, at least amongst a lot of people I'm around, has developed a sort of pejorative sense. So much of the prestige and of what's called linguistic theory has been developed by people sitting on armchairs. And then the rest of the languages of the world are sort of an afterthought. The attitude is like if they find something that works with my theory, great. If they don't... I don't even want to talk to this person. They don't understand.
