The Importance of Gender in Male Puberty
The word gender is ambiguous yeah and it basically has been since it was borrowed from linguistics and deployed in psychology and philosophy. Masculinity is something like appearance in male is something like the underlying reality. It's possible for a male to not abide by those norms or expectations that we're calling masculinity. And I think once we clarify these two possible meanings of gender we realize what you're pointing out about gender are consistent with the claim that the men just are the adult human males.
