How to Spot a Forger?

Forgers will often paint over less valuable, but still period appropriate canvases. X-rays can be used to find the hidden paintings beneath the forgery. Carbon dating of the canvas can give an idea of when the artwork was made. And if the forger did it after World War II, after a slew of nuclear bomb testing.
