The Importance of Noise in Poetry

Baudelaire has a poem where he describes women trembling with the rolling cacophony of the omnibus. Whitman takes a very different perspective on it and thought about that noise as a kind of immersive space for him to claim poetry. He told me that we would recite passages from Shakespeare while riding the omnibus is up Broadway in New York. And so for him it was more a model for how big and how varied his poetry could be, his voice could become his own.
