Despite recent developments politically in Taiwan I think the long-term prognosis for resolving the Taiwan issue peacefully is not particularly good. There's no question that in the short term we are going to see a significant easing of cross-state tensions. With the election of Ma Ying Jue to the presidency there is now a leader in Taiwan committed to preserving the status quo.
