I'm always telling graduate students, my research advice is write about the world, not about the literature. Many graduate students spend too much time reading and too little time thinking. It's more fun to think about a topic that nobody's written about before. I wouldn't want to write the tenth paper on the National Football League draft, but writing the first one was a lot of fun.
