The Oral Tradition of Homer
There would have been many, many forms of the Iliad and the Odyssey. lying behind these poems is along what we call an oral tradition. So that's why some people say, well, there's not really one Homer. There are things we can actually see in the poem, there are certain things which are alluded to but never told in full. For example, the idea of the judgment of Paris... That's probably older as a story than the Homeric epics themselves.
