The Kingdom of Ataly and the Pope
The papacy and the kingdom of ataly were locked in a political stalemate between 1870 and 1929. During this time the vatican was left to its own devices as the king confiscated all land that had been formally held by the papal stele elsewhere. In 1929 the two sides came to terms which established the vatican city as an independent if infinitesimally small but still independent nation. It has remained ever since as a unitary christian theocratic elective absolute monarchy so technically speaking the pope isn't just the head of a religion he is also today ahead of state even if that state is roughly the same size as the maul of America.
