The Tomb of Aristotle
In 1891, Charles Vollstein went to Eritrea looking for lekithoi. He found a tomb with an inscription that mentioned a daughter of Aristotle. This quickly got converted into, well, if the daughter of Aristotle is buried here, then Aristotle himself must be buried there. And I think Vollstein gets carried away by that. Some of the statements he makes get picked up by the media and they create kind of a global factoid. But of course, it's not the tomb of Aristotle. It's a tomb from at least a century later. So the kind of media attention to the this supposed tomb really overwhelmed the actual scientific results that the Americans were achieving there.
