The Role of Wealth and Democracy in Democracy

There's been a long standing theory that wealth is conducive to democracy. In the Renaissance, Italian city states were wealthier per capita than larger monarchies. But there could be deeper reasons why certain societies on a certain trajectory are likely to both be wealthier and more democratic without wealth causing democracy.
