The Importance of Love in the Middle Ages

The reason that people cite most often for why people might not have loved their children in the middle ages is the fact that babies died a lot. An unbaptized child could not be saved, it just wasn't possible, theologically speaking. So if people didn't love their children, this wouldn't matter to them, right? If their children died, and they went to hell, it wouldn't matter at all.
