There is a great deal of legend and many of those legends were retold by the participants themselves as fact. The wonderful story about him being sort of found in a prison cell is possibly one where the myth is a bit shy of the mark. Patty Maine himself never propagated the idea that he'd been picked up in a prison by Sterling. He certainly was arrested and he undoubtedly sumped his senior officer. That is fact, whether Sterling picked him up immediately after that is not quite clear.
