The History of the Greeks
When we last left the Greek mainland around the end of the 8th century BC, cities were just beginning to form. As villages in a particular area grew in size and population, they began to form closer ties with the communities nearest to them. In the most basic sense, those shared local places and the relationships between the people who used them became the building blocks of what we call a polis.
