In Soviet Russia and also in post-Soviet Russia, something that we would take for granted wouldn't be seen by the authorities. What would we really surprise to hear would be a common view in Russia? Well Russia's never had a single democratic transition of power, ever. The idea that you should be able to protest against your government because you disagree with it doesn't really occur to most people everywhere. And the only way that they are able to do so is to go out and get their head smashed in by the riot police. People in the West absolutely do not realise how rare and unique and precious what we have here is.
