I think it's pretty fundamental that a unit of welfare is equally valuable no matter who or what contains it. So if you're saying that an American util is more important than a Mexican util, you're right. I mean, if you just think America for Americans and screw everybody else, you're going to have a different outlook on the world. It's better for our society in the long run for everybody here if we hold these values.

Why do we feel like in order to be productive, happy, or good, we must sacrifice everything else? Is it possible to feel all three at once? Without even knowing it, we’re doing things everyday to sabotage ourselves and our societies, habits that prevent us from optimizing long term happiness. He is the director of the Science of Imagination Laboratory and he co-hosts, along with Dr. Kim Hellemans, the podcast Minding the Brain.
