Psychologists call cognitive entrenchment, which is making assumptions that you don't even realize you're holding. The motivational part being, I don't want to feel like an idiot. And every time I admit that I'm wrong, I feel a little bit dumber. So it's easier to stick to the comfort of conviction rather than embracing the discomfort of doubt.
