There was an absolutely unprecedented level of urbanization in southern mesopotamia. More of the populace living in cities than at any point before or after for thousands of years. This took place against a back drop of increasing and almost continuous conflict between these cities. Each of which fought the others for control of priceless territory and trade routes under its dynasties of kings.
