If you're close to sea level, you are getting the optimal balance of oxygen in the air you breathe. At high altitudes there's very low air pressure in your lungs relative to outside you. So if you're at a high altitude and the air pressure is very low, then you have to put a lot of energy into breathing air into your lungs. You might even find that your shoulders are lifting with each breath because you really have to generate a lot of force to get enough air and oxygen intoyour lungs.
