Is There a Bad Incentive Structure in Academia?
Academics rewards research more than teaching, says David Frum. It's harder to find a good researcher than it is tofind a good teacher and easier to replace them in the U.S., he argues. But when you drop down to lower ranks, schools where research is not highly prioratized, people publish really low quality stuff - even if no one reads it. And that might be a problem, because when you have a job like that, you should be spending more of your time mastering skills rather than producing work for profit.
