If you're the dominant player in search and you stop innovating, then other search engines are coming in and innovating. Drug companies would be unwilling to invest a ton of money in drug research without monopoly power. Apple creates so much money with their dominance in iPhones that they can take that cash and do other things with it. The bread and butter from the monopolistic part of the business can fund new innovations.

Companies discussed: MSFT, WDFC, META, GOOG, GOOGL, DUK, UNP, WM
