The Fear of Death
In a study of judges in the US, half had just one question which prompted them to think about death. It wasn't like you're going to die and rot; it was what do you think is going to happen in the afterlife? The judges who were given that question bail on average eight times higher than the other judges. I see all of those examples as being emblematic of the fact that just basically we cling when there's fear.
