The Illuminati, Masons and Jesuits have been big targets of conspiracy thinking in the paranoid style within American politics. The Americans feared the Illuminati or Illuminism and Masonry at the end of the 18th century. And it even went so far as to say that they were trying to recruit Indigenous people in order to fight against the American government.
