If you talk to anyone who's been a Christian for any length of time if they're honest they'll tell you the old desires probably didn't disappear but they became overpowered by new ones. I've known people who were addicted to porn, find freedom not just by understanding the badness but it's when they knew Christ's love for them to forgive them of their sin. Those that had a hard time loving their enemies find the freedom to do so when they see how Christ Jesus has loved them.
