The Emerald

CHAPTER

Shapeshifting Is Not Limited to Animals

In ancient Egypt the journey was to become falcon flesh and soar towards the piercing light of the stars. The Filipino myths give us at least four classes of shapeshifters. In Mali there are hyena men, in South Africa people become half swallows as their spirits take flight. And our shapeshifting is not limited to animal form. Grandmother Momoy becomes the detura plant. The warrior Ulu becomes the breadfruit tree. There was a woman once who became mer. Her body broke an open in a rush of bitter sap. Another became laurel, the sacred plant of prophecy. What more could we possibly ask for, than to become a river reed?
