In ancient society, especially in europe, women were healers. In india, before we had hospitals, othat, it was elderly ladies who would assist in childbirth. They would have the special skills and knowledge to do it properly. Now, once the christianization started, the church wanted to stamp out every single manifestation of the old culture. And they did not want women to have high status. Women were supposed to be inferior to men.
