If it were me, and I was the one saying, okay, I get to continue the story on from this point, he would absolutely be Saron. Not Aragorn, well, he would be an interesting Saron for the reasons you said. There is not enough in his background that tells me he's gonna be able to do rings. Or it could be, we just haven't introduced him yet. If not Gandalf, turns out to be Tom Bombadil, I'm gonna throw a party.
