Engels, I think, describes it as the world's first great counter-revolution. Women become regarded as valuable assets that belong to someone and can be exploited for what they can provide. And she would literally be sold. The dowry that goes with it, the exchange of goods in a marriage. We think that we're so far removed in those attitudes.
