The Average Rate of Return for 10-Year Treasury Bonds
The average return over the past 30 years for 10-year Treasury bonds is 2% above inflation. What you're paying for with this low return is that guarantee that the money's going to be there. The people who can do that in Social Security make so little money that doing the best is probably an irrelevant outcome anyway. You'd be getting the exact same safety, actually more safety in practice than what Social Security claims to give you.
