John McCarthy predicted that computers wouldn't always be stuck playing in an inferior league of their own. In 1968, he lost a friendly chess game to Scottish master David Levy. Over the next 10 years, Levy excels in out-foxing progressively smarter computer programs. That same year, 14-year-old Gary Kasparov became the youngest player to reach the finals of the Soviet Chess Championship. He's the subject of our next episode.
