In 1800, France reacquired Louisiana in a secret deal with the Spanish. The exact boundaries of the land he acquired were not detailed. Napoleon's dream of an overseas empire faded when his forces were defeated in Haiti. President Thomas Jefferson knew that just saying he had bought the land from France was not enough.
