Travel Writing and the Concept of Utopian Travel Writing
Before the early 18th century, people thought of mountains as being insolent and rocky. Henry Moore developed a theory of space and time on which these are identified with God. His views made their way into literature,. poetry, painting. And slowly, you get a transformation of infinite seeming landscapes like mountainscapes and seascapes. They become associated with God. So mountainscapes are no longer 'ugly walks upon the air' But they are cathedrals to the divine. Here's another concept. There's this concept of utopia, isn't there, throughout philosophy and throughout literature? I think these philosophers and these travel writers, they're looking to portray and understand differences.
