Ashley's mom became a single parent at 22, to Ashley and her younger brother R.C., because her father was imprisoned. A few years later when Ashley is four, her mother is in a new relationship and Ashley is starting to experience and be on the receiving end of her mom's rage. "There was just something about being outside and sort of being expected to be outside a lot that felt right to me," she says.
