The Role of Mechanistic Interpretability

In one sense, mechanistic interpretability is a tool that can help us rigorously understand and fix misalignment. But there's also a big gap between where we are now and where we would want to be from an engineer's perspective. And it seems about as difficult as program synthesis slash program induction slash programming language translation. So I think step two is tractable, or at least it's the kind of thing that we're able to be making progress on. For example, the causal scrubbing agenda is something that's pretty popular in relating to this. That's had a lot of work done recently.
