The History of the Hellenic League
The Hellenic League was the first great Pan-Hellenic activity directed towards non-Greeks. The Greek forces included not only the wealthiest men in hoplites, but also thousands of poorer men who rode the warships. In rising to the occasion, Athens would prove themselves on the sea to be every bit of Sparta's equal in land. Much like Sparta with the Peloponnesian League, their dominance over this new league vaulted Athens to superpower.
