When i entered the community, obedience was more a military virtue than a christian virtue. It's not until after world war two when education itself became as much a priority that you begin to see this shift from military conformity to and asensitivity to the impulses of grace in our lives. The word obedience come comes from the latin word obe, dire, to listen. And the first word of the rule of benedict is, listen, my children, to the precepts of your teacher. Not not jump how high.
