The republican party became extremely anti regulatory, and any kind of regulation of anything. Rolling back environmental protections was an important part of regan's larger agenda to privatize and de regulate the country. There was a growing concern among american industries that all these regulations were going to hurt their bottom line and threaten American progress. Plus, environmentalism was beginning to be seen more and more as an issue of poor communities and communities of color.
