In 1517, a Portuguese ship passed by the island and gave it the name Yila Formosa. One hundred years later, Dutch sailors landed on the Ponghu Islands. The Spanish arrived in Taiwan in 1626 and forced the Japanese settlers to leave. In 1642, the Dutch and the Aboriginal people of Taiwan worked together to kick out the Spanish settlers. They also stopped a rebellion of Chinese settlers, and they took control of the entire island for the first time. For the next 200 years, Taiwan was ruled as part of Fujian province in China.
