The Importance of Inequality in South Africa
The apartheid era was one in which the South African economy modernized but it was one based on exploitation and massive disadvantage. The fact that a certain sort of modernization was achieved under conditions of massive inequality does not imply a causal connection, he says. A society that is more comprehensively prosperous would also be one that enabled growth and didn't challenge profit. But to this extent is not dependent necessarily on exploitation which produces massive poverty and deprivation.
