The History of the United Mine Workers of America

In 1902, the United Mine Workers of America stepped up its activities in West Virginia. The UMWA sent in famed working-class organizer Mother Jones to help them organize. 16,000 miners went out on strike with Pennsylvania miners and shut down 408 coal mines. They had an estimated 180 union men killed on the picket lines during that 30-month period.
