The Pericles Expedition to Epidaurus

Thucydides makes no mention of Pericles' motive here, and if it was meant to be something more than just a harassment of a coastal city, they botched it very badly then. Because after arriving at Epidaurus, Pericles chose to ravage most of the surrounding territory instead. This gave the Epidarians ample time to get their defenses in order. And so when the Athenians finally tried to take the town by assault, the Epidarian were ready and waiting, and thus they were repelled.
