The Importance of Terminal Positions in Chess
The most important thing for a computer chess program is terminal positions. It also looks at material such as how many pawns or pieces we still have on the board. The last thing that's actually the least important but it's still used and will make the difference amongst the very good programs is positional aspects. These include opening books and end-game databases, which are basically prior data from previous games.
