The smashing pumpkins have no punk background, which is what I think is like. It's the biggest thing that sets them apart when we get into the 90s. And it's the rise of quote unquote grunge and whatever. Like a lot of it can be boiled down to the fact that almost every other band that comes out in the 90s that has popularity doesn't have any punk background. They don't, they weren't inspired by punk. But one thing that's really interesting about Billy Corrigan is that his musical sensibility is sort of like forged in the fires of like Boston. No reason to be an insider.
